Volunteer work is carried out without compensation for the benefit of others. The Evangelical Lutheran Church of Finland offers numerous opportunities to serve as a volunteer. Volunteers are engaged in worship services, music activities, youth activities, child work, pastoral care, diaconal work and administrative tasks. The number of volunteers is particularly high within the diaconal work, totalling over 30,000. Telephone counselling (Palveleva puhelin) is one of the oldest forms of volunteer work within the Church, engaging about 2,000 on-duty volunteers on a regular basis. In the Saapas operations, volunteers patrol the streets and in youth events, helping adolescents under the influence of drugs or alcohol.
