The service

The service can be found in the appendix to the hymnal, in other service books and the wedding ceremony booklet (pdf). The ceremony can take place in the context of the Eucharist.

The service proceeds as follows:

  • Introductory music
  • Invocation
  • Introductory words
  • (Psalm)
  • The wedding prayer
  • Reading(s) from scripture
  • A short homily

  • The marriage:
  • Declarations
  • Prayer over the rings
  • (Vows)
  • Proclamation of the marriage
  • Blessing of the marriage

  • Hymn or suitable music
  • Prayers of intercession
  • The Lord’s Prayer
  • Blessing and Dismissal
  • Recessional (a hymn, song or instrumental piece)

The service begins with a wedding march or hymn, and the couple moves to the front of the altar and kneels before it. Before God and the congregation, they express their will to love one another and exchange rings as a sign of their union. After the proclamation of the marriage, the congregation prays for the couple and their families. Finally, the congregation stands as the couple processes out of the church, followed by their parents, grandparents and siblings.

A happy married couple and a priest behind them.
