Church year

The rhythm and content of the Church’s worship follows the calendar, which affords each Sunday and feast day its own readings and prayers.

The Evangelical Lutheran Church of Finland follows the western calendar, in which the church year begins on the First Sunday of Advent, culminates in Easter and concludes with the Sunday of Christ the King in late November.

The church year is composed of three sequences built around major festivals: Christmas, which we prepare to celebrate during the season of Advent and which concludes on the last Sunday after Epiphany; Easter, which we prepare for during the season of Lent and which continues until Pentecost; and Pentecost, with ten days’ of preparation following Ascension Day and continuing until the Sunday of Christ the King.
