The death of someone close to us can bring grief, uncertainty and many practical questions. In the midst of loss, there is no single right way to grieve. The Evangelical Lutheran Church of Finland offers both spiritual and concrete support in your grief.
In the Christian faith, death is not the end of the story. Christians place their hope in God’s love and in the promise of resurrection and eternal life. A funeral gives family members and friends an opportunity to honour the life of the person who has died, entrust them to God’s care and share their grief with others.
A funeral in the Evangelical Lutheran Church of Finland is a Christian service of farewell. It usually includes Bible readings, prayers, hymns and words of comfort. The service is led by a pastor and can be held in a church, chapel or at the graveside.
The funeral is planned together with the pastor and other relevant parish workers. Family members and friends can take part in the service, for example by choosing readings, music and flowers.
In Finland, funerals are usually arranged with the help of the local parish and, if the family wishes, a funeral director. The arrangements include choosing the time and place of the service, deciding between burial and cremation, and arranging the burial plot or the final placement of the ashes.
You do not have to manage everything alone. The parish can advise you on the funeral service and cemetery arrangements, while a funeral director can help with many practical details.
Grief takes time, and people experience it in different ways. You can contact your local parish if you would like to talk with a pastor or another parish worker, pray together or receive support after the funeral.
