Volunteers play an important part in the essential, but often unnoticed, diaconal work of parishes.
If you are reasonably fit and have some time to spare, you can offer to assist people whose mobility is limited by age, illness or disability. You don’t need any prior experience: parishes train and support volunteers and offer advice on dealing with different personalities.Volunteers offer companionship and practical assistance to people at home, in hospital and in other care facilities. You can, for example, take someone of limited mobility for a walk, assist them with shopping or a visit to the doctor, or act as a surrogate grandparent to a child in need. You can also help organise flea markets, assist with parish lunches and meals on wheels, lead a discussion group or help organise a trip or a camp.Every parish has its own needs. Contact your local diaconal workers to find out how you can help.
