People belong to the Evangelical Lutheran Church of Finland for different reasons and take part in its life in different ways. Most become members through baptism as children; others join later in life. Members belong to the local parish where they live.
The Church brings people together in worship, parish activities and moments that matter in life. Members may take part regularly or occasionally, volunteer, serve in elected positions, or support the work of their parish in other ways.
The Church welcomes everyone to its services and activities, whether or not they are members.
Each Church member belongs to a local parish based on where they live. Parishes offer worship, activities for people of different ages, pastoral care and practical support. Find your local parish to see what is happening in your area.
A person can become a member through baptism. People who have been baptised in another Christian church are not baptised again. Those who have not been baptised can contact their local parish to learn about baptism and preparation for joining.
Church membership also gives members the right to vote in parish elections and take part in the Church’s decision-making. Members support the Church’s work through church tax.
For information about joining the Church, contact your local parish or visit our joining information page.If you have left the Church but want to rejoin, you can easily do so online.
