Letter by the bishops of the Evangelical Lutheran Church of Finland on the occasion of 24 February 2023, the one-year anniversary of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.Russia’s illegal war in Ukraine continues. The amount of suffering caused and the number of human lives sacrificed is unbearable. Ukrainians need all the help and support it is possible to give. The war is having far-reaching effects that are giving rise to concern, also in Finland. In these times, we need to show solidarity and solicitude. We have invited parishes to ring their church bells for peace on the one-year anniversary of the war in Ukraine, on 24 February 2023 at noon.Congregations will pray for Ukraine and Ukrainians on the Sunday following the anniversary and in services to come. Parishes will also organise moments of prayer in support of the people of Ukraine. We have encouraged parishes to also organise support events together with local organisations and to build a connection with Ukrainian refugees in Finland. We encourage everyone to remember the people of Ukraine in their prayers, donate to their local relief organisations and show their support for Ukrainians residing in Finland.“Lord, you will establish peace for us.” (Isaiah 26:12)Bishops of the Evangelical Lutheran Church of Finland
