Pastoral care of the sick

The Church acknowledges and upholds the uniqueness and value of every human being. We are therefore especially committed to the pastoral care of the sick and the suffering, the restless and the weary. Every life situation affords an opportunity to find communion with God.

Parish workers offer support and care to the sick and their loved ones at home, in hospitals and in institutions. Parish clergy work alongside hospital chaplains in this. Hospital staff will refer you to the chaplain on request, and the local parish office will put you in touch with clergy and diaconal workers whose work includes both hospital and home visits.

Hospital chaplains have specialised theological training. They are available for confidential personal discussions under the terms always set by the patient.

Many parishes also have volunteers who can offer help to those who are sick at home by running errands, keeping a person company or assisting them in taking exercise.
