The Church in numbers

Church statistics offer insights into the role the Church plays in Finnish society.

In 2017, membership of the Evangelical Lutheran Church of Finland included approximately four million Finns, or 72% of the population.

In 2016, 36,600 infants became Church members through baptism, and almost 17,000 adult Finns joined the Church.

The Church comprises 400 parishes (as of 1 January 2017), which employ approximately 20,000 people in total.

In 2015, the Church had 2,123 pastors. In addition to their traditional role in parishes, pastors can also serve as hospital chaplains or family counsellors.

In 2015, 54.5% of our pastors were men and 45.5% women. Of hospital chaplains and family counsellors, 70% were women, and 14% of vicars were women. In total, 71% of all Church staff were women and 29% men that year.
