God gives the church times of renewal as well as people who help it to return to the basics of Christian faith, the Bible and the message of justification by faith. Reformation Sunday is celebrated on the Twenty Second Sunday after Pentecost, which falls around the time (October 31st) that Martin Luther nailed his famous theses to the door of the Castle Church in Wittenburg, an event that is considered the beginning of the Reformation. In his theses, he called for the renewal of the church.
The readings of the day are related to the main themes of the Reformation: secular and spiritual power, the atoning work of Christ and faith.
Almighty and most merciful God,
you have given the Spirit of reform
to all who follow you.
Help us, with your whole church,
to hold fast to your word
and show our faith in you
in deeds of love.
