Calendar

The rhythm and content of the church's worship is informed by the calendar, which gives each Sunday and feast day its own readings and prayers.

The Evangelical Lutheran Church of Finland follows the western calendar, in which the church's year begins on the First Sunday of Advent. The heart of the church's year is Easter. It concludes with the Sunday of Christ the King in late November.

The year is composed of three sequences built around major festivals: Christmas, for the celebration of which we prepare during the season of Advent, and which concludes on the last Sunday after Epiphany; Easter, for which we prepare during the season of Lent, and which continues until Pentecost; and Pentecost, with ten days' of preparation following Ascension Day and continuing until the Sunday of Christ the King.
