In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God." (John 1.1)
Christ is God's Word made flesh; and that Word is enfleshed now in the lives of the faithful and in the proclamation of Scripture.
- calls us to love God with all our heart, soul, mind and strength, and our neighbour as ourself. This double commandment of love is the most important, and is contained in both the Old and New Testaments.
- is the sacred book of all Christians, because through it God's will is revealed. It is the standard by which all the church's teachings are measured.
- is a record of what people have seen, heard and believed; it therefore combines both divine and human perspectives.
- is the church's book, and it is always read in worship. The institution by Christ of the sacraments of Baptism and Eucharist is described in the Bible.
